How much does it cost to sell a luxury item: commission, appraisal, payment

top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;">When you sell a luxury item through a resale platform, you usually don't have to pay for the listing upfront. The main cost of the service is a commission deducted after the sale. The owner's payout depends on the agreed price, the product category, the commission rate and the final sale price.

How much does it cost to sell a luxury item through a resale platform?

A preliminary appraisal at The Originals is free. The main cost of the service is the commission the platform receives once the item is sold. Its amount depends on the item's price: the higher the price, the lower the commission rate can be.

Under The Originals' current terms of sale, the commission covers:

  • delivery of the item from the seller to the office;
  • inspection of condition and authenticity;
  • professional photography and description;
  • listing the item on the website;
  • communication with buyers;
  • order processing and delivery to the buyer.

You don't need to pay for these services separately. Exceptions are possible if the item fails authentication or if special terms apply to a particular category.

How is a designer item appraised?

The appraisal of luxury items takes place in several stages:

  1. The owner sends the brand name, information about the model and condition, and photos of the item.
  2. An expert checks whether the item meets the platform's criteria.
  3. The seller receives a preliminary recommended price and possible terms of sale.
  4. The item is delivered to the office for a physical inspection.
  5. Specialists check the item's condition, completeness, specifications and authenticity.
  6. The final price, commission and other terms of sale are agreed with the owner.

The Originals provides a free preliminary appraisal within approximately 24–48 hours. It is not final: after the physical inspection, the price may change if the actual condition, model or set differs from what was stated in the request.

What affects the appraisal of a luxury item?

The appraisal takes into account a combination of the item's characteristics:

  • the brand and specific model;
  • demand on the secondary market;
  • year of release and relevance of the design;
  • actual condition and signs of wear;
  • any repairs, recoloring or replaced parts;
  • completeness — box, dust bag, strap, documents and other items;
  • material, color and size;
  • rarity or limited edition;
  • market value of comparable items;
  • sales history of similar items.

The original boutique price may also be taken into account, but it is not the only criterion. A popular or rare model sometimes retains a significant share of its value, while an item with low demand may sell for less regardless of its original price.

How does an appraisal differ from the sale price?

A preliminary appraisal is a recommended price guideline that an expert determines based on the information and photos provided. After the item is physically inspected, the owner and the platform agree on the listing price — the amount at which the item is published on the website.

The listing price is not always the same as the sale price. If the item is repriced or sold at a discount, its actual value changes. It is the final sale price — not the preliminary appraisal or the initial price on the website — that determines the owner's payout.

How is the sales commission calculated?

The Originals' commission rate depends on two parameters: the product category and its price. One rate scale applies to bags, watches and jewelry, and another to clothing, shoes and other categories.

Each price range has its own rate. The more expensive the item, the lower the commission percentage. That's why there is no single universal rate for all items.

The actual payout is calculated using the formula:

Final sale price − service commission = owner's payout.

If the item was sold after repricing or at a discount, the payout is calculated based on the sale price after the repricing or discount.

What commission applies to bags, watches and jewelry?

Under the current The Originals commission scale, the following rates apply to bags, watches and jewelry:

Commission for bags, watches and jewelry

Item sale price The Originals commission
1–4,000 UAH 60%
4,001–6,000 UAH 50%
6,001–10,000 UAH 45%
10,001–15,000 UAH 40%
15,001–25,000 UAH 35%
25,001–40,000 UAH 30%
40,001–100,000 UAH 25%
from 100,001 UAH 20%

For example, a 30% rate applies to a bag priced at 30,000 UAH, and a 20% rate to a bag priced over 100,000 UAH.

What commission applies to clothing, shoes and other categories?

A separate rate scale applies to clothing, shoes, accessories and other categories:

Commission for clothing, shoes and other categories

Item sale price The Originals commission
1–4,000 UAH 65%
4,001–6,000 UAH 55%
6,001–10,000 UAH 45%
10,001–15,000 UAH 40%
15,001–25,000 UAH 35%
from 25,001 UAH 30%

For example, the commission for a clothing item priced at 8,000 UAH is 45%, and for an item priced over 25,000 UAH it is 30%. The rate scale for bags, watches and jewelry does not apply to these categories.

What does the resale platform's commission include?

The Originals' commission covers the entire process of preparing and selling the item. It includes:

  • delivery of the item from the seller to the office;
  • inspection of the item's actual condition;
  • authenticity check;
  • professional photography;
  • writing the description and listing the item on the website;
  • communication with potential buyers;
  • order processing;
  • arranging delivery of the sold item to the buyer.

These services are part of the platform's work and are covered by the commission deducted after the item is sold.

How do you calculate the seller's payout?

The payout is calculated using the formula:

Sale price − The Originals commission = seller's net payout.

The commission amount is determined as follows:

Sale price × commission rate = commission amount.

The rate depends on the item's category and price range. Current rates are listed on the The Originals commission page.

Example 1 — clothing:

  • dress sale price — 8,000 UAH;
  • commission rate — 45%;
  • commission amount — 8,000 × 45% = 3,600 UAH;
  • net payout — 8,000 − 3,600 = 4,400 UAH.

Example 2 — bag:

  • sale price — 30,000 UAH;
  • commission rate — 30%;
  • commission amount — 30,000 × 30% = 9,000 UAH;
  • net payout — 30,000 − 9,000 = 21,000 UAH.

Example 3 — watch:

  • sale price — 120,000 UAH;
  • commission rate — 20%;
  • commission amount — 120,000 × 20% = 24,000 UAH;
  • net payout — 120,000 − 24,000 = 96,000 UAH.

When does the seller receive the payout for a sold item?

The payout becomes available after the buyer has received and paid for the parcel at a Nova Poshta branch. The funds usually reach the seller within 2 hours of that moment.

Payments are made via NovaPay, Nova Poshta's financial service. If the seller already has a NovaPay account, the funds are credited to it automatically. They can be used for payments, transferred to another bank card or withdrawn in cash at a Nova Poshta branch.

If you don't have an account yet, you need to open one in the NovaPay app. Full terms are published on the seller payouts page.

How do repricing and discounts affect the payout?

For the first 60 days after the item arrives at the warehouse and the acceptance certificate is signed, The Originals does not reprice the item. After that, the price may gradually decrease depending on demand, market value and the sales results of similar items.

Under the current terms of sale, after 60 days the platform may apply a monthly discount of 5–15%. The maximum discount is 30% for bags and jewelry priced over 30,000 UAH, and 50% for clothing and shoes.

The commission rate is determined by the item's category and initial price before any discount is applied. The final payout is calculated based on the actual sale price.

For example, a bag was initially listed at 30,000 UAH, with a commission rate of 30%. After a 10% discount, the item sold for 27,000 UAH:

  • final sale price — 27,000 UAH;
  • commission rate — 30%;
  • commission amount — 8,100 UAH;
  • seller's payout — 18,900 UAH.

What additional costs may the seller incur?

Additional costs are possible if the item is returned to the owner, fails inspection, or if the seller ends the sale early.

If the item turns out to be a replica, it is returned via Nova Poshta at the owner's expense. For bags, you may also need to reimburse the cost of the Entrupy check. Individual terms may apply to hermes/hermes-zhinkam/hermes-sumky" target="_blank" rel="noopener" style="color: #236fa1; text-decoration: underline;">Hermès bags, watches and jewelry.

The Originals accepts items on consignment for up to 12 months. If the owner takes the item back earlier, the platform may require reimbursement of operating costs for authentication, photography, description and preparation for sale. The amount depends on the category and the checks performed, so the current amount should be confirmed again before arranging the return.

What luxury items can be consigned for sale?

The Originals accepts items from premium and luxury brands in the following categories:

  • bags;
  • clothing;
  • shoes;
  • accessories;
  • watches;
  • jewelry.

Whether a specific item is accepted depends on the brand, model, condition, completeness and demand. The platform does not accept counterfeits, mass-market products, defective items, or items with significant damage, permanent stains or other signs of poor condition.

How do you sell a designer item through The Originals?

Selling through The Originals involves several stages:

  1. Submit a request, specifying the brand, category, model and condition, and adding photos of the item.
  2. Get a preliminary appraisal and a recommended price.
  3. Hand over the item to The Originals courier or send it via Nova Poshta using the waybill created on the platform.
  4. Agree on the terms. After the physical inspection, agree on the price, commission rate and terms of sale with the manager.
  5. Wait for the listing — after the authenticity check, professional photography and description are completed.
  6. Track the status of your item in your personal account.
  7. Receive your payout via NovaPay once the buyer has received and paid for the order.

You can submit a request on The Originals selling page.

How does selling through a resale platform differ from selling on your own?

The main difference lies in how the work and costs are divided. When selling on your own, the owner handles every stage of the deal, while a resale platform takes on most of the tasks and receives a commission for this after the item is sold.

Stage Through a resale platform Selling on your own
Workload The owner submits a request, hands over the item and agrees on the terms. The platform handles preparation and sale The seller organizes every stage of the sale independently
Authenticity check The item is checked by the platform's experts, and additional technologies or services may be used for certain categories The seller has to confirm authenticity themselves or order an independent authentication
Content creation The platform photographs the item, writes the description and publishes the listing The seller takes the photos, describes the condition and posts the listing
Finding a buyer The item is offered to the platform's audience and promoted through its channels The seller chooses the marketplaces, updates the listings and looks for a buyer
Communication The platform answers questions and agrees on order details The seller handles messages, calls and price offers
Logistics The platform arranges collection of the item and delivery to the buyer The seller packs the item, arranges shipping and monitors delivery
Fraud risk The deal follows the platform's rules and payment mechanisms, reducing the need for direct transactions with an unknown buyer The seller has to verify the payment, the buyer and the safety of the proposed deal
Costs A commission is deducted after the sale; its amount depends on the item's category and price There is no platform commission, but there may be costs for listings, authentication, delivery and payment services

A resale platform reduces the seller's workload but does not guarantee a higher price or a faster sale. The result depends on the brand, model, condition, agreed price, season and demand.

Frequently asked questions about selling luxury items

Do I have to pay for a designer item appraisal?

A preliminary appraisal at The Originals is free. The seller sends information and photos, after which an expert determines whether the item can be accepted and recommends a price.

What commission percentage is deducted after the sale?

The rate depends on the item's category and price. Under The Originals' current commission scale, it is 20–60% for bags, watches and jewelry, and 30–65% for clothing, shoes and other categories.

The funds become available after the buyer has received and paid for the parcel. The NovaPay payout usually arrives within two hours of confirmed receipt.

What happens if the item doesn't sell?
